Part of Hangar's event series, this Grey Tuesday celebrates administration as an unassuming yet persistent force behind our collective endeavours. Attuning to autumnal overcasting and diminishing daylight, Maja Kuzmanović and Nik Gaffney will shift the hue toward dark grey, wielding administrative strategies as forms of magic. In a series of immersive experiments, we will collect rituals that help us maneuver through the grey areas of the administrative.

Underneath its guise as a tool of hierarchical institutions (governments, corporations, bureaucracies), administration has its roots in care and ritual. The history of the word – administratio (assistance, guidance, cooperation) and ad-ministrare (to serve, attend to) – can remind us that administration should help rather than hinder. Administration facilitates. It is capable of shapeshifting, conjuring, revealing. Quintessentially collaborative, administration can not exist apart from something larger — a wider purpose or organisation of humans and other (legal, material, etherial) entities. Acknowledging and celebrating the diverse protocols we use to invoke, appease, or banish these entities can stimulate a sense of agency and possibility for novice and seasoned administrators alike.

We will mark the conclusion of Grey Tuesdays with a grimoire of administrative rituals. There will be toasts, laughs, and a spread of refreshments in many shades of grey.
